On Friday, 19 July 2024, hundreds of neurodivergent young people and their supporters gathered at Parliament for the Young Neurodiversity Champions Hui.
The event featured speeches from neurodivergent leaders, Mayor Tory Whanau, and Chlöe Swarbrick MP; inspiring stories and advocacy from the Young Neurodiversity Champions; and a Changing The Game politicians panel featuring the Minister for Mental Health and Youth and the Labour and Green spokespeople for education.
We urged our politicians to take immediate action to support neurodiversity in education, calling for improvements in teacher training, resources, and a cohesive, cross-government strategy with cross-party support. The National, Labour and Green representatives present committed to that agenda.
The Young Neurodiversity Champions are now pushing for meetings with key ministers to set a timeline for change, with updates to follow.
Supported by the Neurodiversity in Education Project, the hui was a satellite event of Festival for the Future and hosted by the Cross-Party Mental Health and Addictions Wellbeing Group.
